About

The importance of regulating open spaces, which is one of the most important points for the growing urbanisation to take place in a healthy way, and the importance of the studies carried out in order to prevent the urbanisation process from separating people from natural areas is increasing day by day. Landscape architecture, which is still a young field of study, shows itself as a versatile field where planning, design, engineering and art meet. Landscape architecture is defined as a branch where the search for a functional, high quality and high standard design in urban, rural and natural areas meets engineering and art. In our programme, which trains landscape architects who design and implement open spaces in a wide range of scales from building scale to city, region and country scale, our students are aimed to design open spaces that have visual, functional, technical, economic and ecological values and improve the quality of life in order to ensure the communication of individuals with nature and urban environment. Landscape architects are actively involved in the planning, design and implementation processes of open and natural areas such as terrace and building gardens, public housing gardens, children's playgrounds, sports fields, pedestrian areas, city squares, coastal areas, parks, botanical and zoo gardens, motorway landscape designs, outdoor entertainment and recreation areas (recreation), national parks, etc.

The Department of Landscape Architecture was established within ITU Faculty of Architecture and started teaching in the 2002-2003 academic year. ITU Department of Landscape Architecture is the first Landscape Architecture Department within the Faculty of Architecture in Turkey. Our department trains landscape architects who design and realise a wide range of open space designs ranging from building scale to city, region and country scale. Landscape Architecture education aims to inform students about landscape design and application techniques, professional practice, landscape planning, natural and human sciences, visual communication and environmental management. In addition, the aim of the education is to provide students with the skills of research, data collection, synthesis and problem solving and to enable them to reflect these skills to design with freehand drawing, technical drawing and computer drawing techniques. The students of the Department of Landscape Architecture are educated as individuals who are aware of the values of social justice, economic prosperity and efficient use of resources and the protection of the social and historical environment and who have professional ethical responsibilities.

In Landscape Architecture education, it is aimed to inform students about human and natural sciences, landscape planning, visual communication, landscape engineering, environmental management, professional practice in landscape design and applications. The language of instruction is 100% English. The Department of Landscape Architecture is the first and only Landscape Architecture Department in Turkey to be fully recognised/accredited by the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA). The undergraduate education in the Department of Landscape Architecture is 100% in English. The fact that the language of instruction is in English and that it is recognised by IFLA increases our students' opportunities for research and employment in international platforms. At ITU Faculty of Architecture, Landscape Architecture education is carried out jointly with the Departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, and Industrial Design, especially in the first three semesters, in order to facilitate horizontal transfer through the Double Major programme and to create an interdisciplinary environment. The curriculum of the Department of Landscape Architecture is designed in a way to facilitate double major and horizontal transfer with other departments within the Faculty of Architecture, especially the Department of Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, and Department of Industrial Design.

Graduates of the programme of Landscape Architecture Department receive the title of ‘Landscape Architect’. Graduates have the opportunity to work in public and private sectors. Landscape Architects work in inter-disciplinary relationships with urban planners, architects and urban designers in a wide range of fields from building scale to urban and regional scale.
