The Anarcheological Dialectics

This project stands out with its integration of Istanbul's historic city walls with a modern urban identity. Considering the earthquake history and the structural weakness of the walls, the project proposes structures that support the crumbling walls from the outside acting as an 'exoskeleton'. By introducing a new path of pedestrian circulation to the existing wall line, it aims to transform the walls into a public activity space. Thus, the re-imagined spaces expand from the structures that stabilise the walls to form platforms, terraces, decks and towers. This proposal aims not only to preserve the historic structure, but also to reveal the current state of the walls to its users with a new understanding of an archaeological park. Through the use of additional structures and lightweight lines, the difference between new and old becomes immediately apparent. This project offers a bold step towards the integration of Istanbul's city walls into contemporary urban life, rather than remaining only as a historical monument.
