“Call for Action! Vulnerable Coastal Ecosystems from Lagoon to Seaside”
Landscape Design III (PEM 312E - CRN 20818) – “Call for Action! Vulnerable Coastal Ecosystems from Lagoon to Seaside” will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Ayçim Türer Başkaya @aycimbaskaya and Res. Assist. Gizem Aluçlu Armutcu @gizemaluclu in the 2024-2025 Spring Semester.
Today, the pressure of climate change on various ecosystems is becoming increasingly dramatic. Coastal ecosystems are among the most vulnerable living systems in the world, facing catastrophic consequences such as sea level rise and flooding. Recently, coastal ecosystems in Istanbul have been additionally threatened by the effects of salinization or mucilaginous pollution.
Considering these problematic coastal landscapes, the Landscape Design III studio aims to develop landscape strategies to address the effects of climate change and to constitute innovative design solutions in the harmony of land art and landscape remediation. Benefitting from a specific historical area where the Büyükçekmece Lagoon meets the Marmara coastline, this studio encourages students to discover ways for the sustainability of vulnerable water-dominant urban landscapes.
