Landscape Design I: Groundwork studio report

LANDSCAPE DESIGN I (CRN: 23318) GROUNDWORK: “touch the earth lightly” was led by Assoc. Prof. Meltem Erdem Kaya, PhD. @meltem_erdem_kaya and was assisted by Res. Assist. Hüseyin Ögçe @huseyinogce.

Landscape Design I Studio, with its collective name GROUNDWORK, invites students to discover the hidden potentials of nature and its productive mechanism over two case projects. The studio questions the design action as a mode of discovery of new processes, new ideas on nature and culture based on intellectual discussions on nature, wildscape and culture. Groundwork introduces the idea of design as a cultural act that includes different levels of operations and manipulations on land to create a new life medium for nature.

Landscape Design I: Landscape Social Ecology and Ethics Studio Report

LANDSCAPE DESIGN I (CRN: 23319) and Landform & Built Environment Studio (CRN: 25122) was led by Meliz Akyol Alay, PhD. @melizakyoll and was assisted by Res. Assist. Başak Akarsu @basakakarsu

The Landscape Design I studio course introduces students to the fundamental elements of landscape design at the scale of public space in the urban context. The studio investigates landscape design methods and approaches, based on morphological, experimental and visual,  to develop spatial landscape settings with diverse programs and functions. The studio is structured in two modules, each focusing on different content and methodology.

Landscape Design II: Climate Change, Water & Social Justice studio report

LANDSCAPE DESIGN II (CRN: 23325) CLIMATE CHANGE, WATER & SOCIAL JUSTICE was led by Prof. Hayriye Eşbah Tuncay, PhD. @hetpeyzaj and was assisted by Res. Assist. Lâl Dalay @l.dalay.

Cities have to deal with urgent environmental problems. Future projections, including the IPCC report, warn us to act fast on climate change and a zero-carbon future. As the unbridled global climate crisis proceed, humanity faces the challenges of too much or too little water. The recent United Nations Climate Change Conference emphasized unprecedented threats to urban landscapes and vulnerable communities. Thus, not only the amount but also the equitable access and provision of water becomes a critical issue. In this context, Landscape Design II studio tackles the social justice dimension of climate change and equitable water distribution in a multiscale, and multidimensional way. The studio combines landscape, architecture, and urbanism strategies to explore how design at different scales can address the challenges of urban landscapes in a constantly changing world. Within the scope of the studio, students will explore the intertwined themes of water and social justice, and propose alternative urban scenarios which will enhance the daily lives of urban communities at a human scale and ecosystem scale.

Landscape Design III (CRN: 23328): Virissis-Verissa studio report

LANDSCAPE DESIGN III (CRN: 23328) VIRISSIS-VERISSA: POST][NEW Landscape Scenarios for Kaynarca-Kırklareli was led by Assist. Prof. Dr. Melih Bozkurt @mel_bozkurt with the help of Fatma Sultan Yaman @fatmasultanny and the consultancy of Gülce Kantürer @gulcekanturer in 2021-2022.

2021-22 Spring Term Landscape Design III Studio focuses on the transformation of the rural-urban relationship. When the reality of climate change is added to this relationship, which sometimes confronts us with the dimension of conflict and sometimes interaction, new agenda items have emerged for the settlements between rural and urban areas. In this context, the studio focuses on the Kaynarca settlement in Kırklareli. The main purpose of the studio is; to discuss the rural-urban relationship with its current situation and related issues, and to develop visionary POST][NEW landscape design scenarios for the settlements between these two extremes.

Landscape Design IV: Symbiosis

Landscape Design IV: Symbiosis studio report

LANDSCAPE DESIGN IV (CRN: 23340) SYMBIOSIS was led by Prof. Gülşen Aytaç, PhD. @gulsenaytacc and was assisted by Res. Assist. Arzu Güler @arzu.gulr.

The environmental crisis, such as climate change, decrease of biodiversity, lack of water resources and drought, etc., create “vulnerable” landscapes in urban areas. On the other hand, we are also living in the age of Urbanization, Transportation, Mass Production, and Digitalization. The dichotomies of issues and facts create “trapped” landscapes. Under the theme “Symbiosis”, Landscape Design Studio IV invites participants to reveal the ecological, historical, and cultural/social potentials of trapped landscapes of Samatya, Istanbul located in the Historical Peninsula which is under the list of UNESCO heritage. In the intersection of dualities (living-nonliving, human-nonhuman, manual-digital, etc.), the studio seeks new design approaches towards the possibilities of new living spaces in the urban.
