“Lost Leftovers: Jammed Greens In Anthropocene Flux”

Landscape Design III - PEM 312E (CRN 24538)– “Lost Leftovers: Jammed Greens In Anthropocene Flux” will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Gülşen Aytaç and Res. Assist. Lâl Dalay Algan in the 2025-2026 Spring Semester.

This studio invites students to explore the hidden potential of “lost” and “jammed” spaces within the dense urban fabric of Bomonti and Feriköy. As one of the most significant witnesses to Istanbul’s industrialization, this district offers a unique structure where industrialization and residential fabric are intertwined, shaped by a distinct ethnic demographic. Focusing on the theme of “Lost Leftovers,” the project investigates how urban voids and industrial remnants, trapped within accelerating urbanization, can be redefined in light of evolving human needs over time and the ongoing industrial transformation of the area.

Students will analyze the tension between the neighborhood's industrial heritage and today's high-density development, identifying fragmented ecosystems. The project aims to redefine the ecosystem of the squeezed urban fabric, existing in both horizontal and vertical planes, transforming neglected remnants into vital components where social flow and production persist. Through site-specific design interventions, students will propose new approaches to enhance urban resilience in these transition zones. Focusing on the question, ‘How can landscape architecture mediate the Anthropocene flow to revitalize the city's squeezed open-green hybrid spaces?’, this studio encourages students to develop creative and adaptable design solutions that respond to the coexistence of industry and housing.
