“From Vision to Ground: Discovering Urban Futures through National Gardens”

Landscape Design III - PEM 312E  (CRN 24537) “From Vision to Ground: Discovering Urban Futures through National Gardens” will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Fatma Ayçim Türer Başkaya  and Res. Assist. Fatma Sultan Bozkurt in the 2025-2026 Spring Semester.

This studio invites students to explore the concept of the Living Hub by focusing on the adaptive transformation of health, education, and culture-oriented hubs embedded within dense and old urban fabrics that possess fragile socio-spatial conditions. Grounded in the framework of Istanbul Vision 2050, the studio invites students to develop thematic scenarios through scenario-making processes, critically examining the interplay between long-term vision strategies and spatial development. The study area is framed as a transition zone between Güngören and Bağcılar, where administrative boundaries dissolve, and dynamic urban life is produced through the interplay of dense built environments and thematic hubs, including several national gardens. The studio therefore opens a critical discussion on the evolving role of national gardens within Istanbul’s future urban structure.  The project is expected to adopt a risk-aware approach, taking into account the environmental, social, and urban risks currently experienced by the city, while proposing resilient and forward-looking design strategies.
