Landscape Design I – PEM 212E (CRN 24532) – “Operating Urban Collisions: Rethinking Neighborhood In Cihangir” will be conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru Erbaş Gürler and assisted by Res. Asst. Ezgi Beyen in the 2025–2026 Spring Semester.

While the conventional neighborhood notion means a settlement area composed of houses and some services that meet the needs of residents, today’s paradigm of neighborhood has been changing with the dense urbanization and city-scale developments. The contextual shift from conventional neighborhood to new kind of neighborhood can be varied according to the background and current developments in the area. Cihangir, with the historical background and touristic popularity, leads to an ambiguous situation. By being located in the middle of İstiklal Street and Karaköy, tourist flows, artistic events, religional rituals, and commercial activities have overlapped with the local people’s neighborhood life, which raises the question: Is it a neighborhood or center, or both of them at once? In between these complex urban flows, idle spaces (non-urban spaces) hint at a great opportunity to collide these flows and create today’s new neighborhood life. The studio invites students to see the rich fluxes of Cihangir and operate them in a new context to create new ways of being in the neighborhood.
