"Sediment of Time: Priene – Shifting Grounds"
The Graduation Project Jury C, titled "Sediment of Time: Priene – Shifting Grounds", will be conducted under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Hayriye Eşbah Tunçay and Dr. Çisem Demirel Koyun as the core jury members and will be assisted by Mürşit Sönmez and Enes Karakaya.
The jury brings together Prof. Dr. Zeynep Kuban, Architect Burak Dolu, Architect Hasan Gümüşsoy, and Urban Planner Bedel Esma Emre as guest jury members. Architect Mine Aşçı, Head of the Priene Site Management, will take part in the jury as advisor.
The Landscape Architecture Graduation Studio C section for the Spring Semester of 2025–2026 focuses on the Ancient City of Priene and the nearby settlement of Güllübahçe, located within the boundaries of Söke district in Aydın Province, under the theme of living heritage landscapes. From a broader perspective, the studio aims to understand the relationships of this area with the Büyük Menderes Delta and the slopes of Mount Samsun (Mykale); to address the site in a way that reflects multilayered historical processes spanning from antiquity to the present; and to construct an integrated reading and design process in which the relationships between nature, culture, history, and space are intertwined.
In this context, the studio expects students to interpret Priene and its surroundings not merely as a “conservation site,” but as a dynamic cultural landscape system where ecological, historical, socio-cultural, and spatial layers intersect. Within the Büyük Menderes Delta, the relationships between blue infrastructure (hydrological networks, wetlands, former shoreline traces), green infrastructure (slope, plain, and delta ecosystems, natural vegetation, agricultural lands, ecological corridors, rural fabrics), grey infrastructure (transportation and urban drainage networks), and the socio-economic structure (sectoral, cultural, and social networks) will be analyzed through analytical methods. Based on this multilayered structure, students will develop new landscape scenarios.
